Windy Woes Turns into a Marketing Win

Tent down after strong winds.

Mason pulled up the event checklist. The canopy with the SALUS logo? Check. It looked sharp, smart, and elegant. He packed a small cross-body bag with tape, screws, loose manual tools, and a drill to stretch the 10-foot tent into place. Four sturdy bags containing 20-lb weights were also packed to ensure the tent stood strong and bold among a sea of vendor stands at the 152nd Street Festival in Spanish Harlem.

Our five-person crew assembled in matching branded T-shirts to maximize brand identity. To truly activate the space, Mason hired a seasoned costume performer, Angelo, to bring a giant-proportioned Coquí (the iconic Puerto Rican frog) to life. The goal? Create shareable photo-ops and encourage fans to sign up to march alongside our giant Coquí in the upcoming National Puerto Rican Day Parade (NPRDP). Meanwhile, our administration team was armed with business cards to forge B2B partnerships with local vendors, and walking staff were ready to distribute flyers to drive digital traffic to the Stopandlook.us (SALUS) website.

The late-May day was sunny and beautiful. It was, however, unusually windy...

Instead of hiding under the security of a tent, our mascot became a mobile, crowd-pleasing sensation.

Changing it up!

It wasn’t long before the winds kicked up to a wild 40 miles per hour. Under the sheer force of the gales, our blue and white canopy tent collapsed. With the structure compromised, our 8-foot giant Coquí could no longer fit underneath.

In marketing, the best plans thrive in pliable moments. Mason didn't panic. He dropped the tent to a safe, low profile and sent Angelo, our giant Coquí, straight into the crowd.

The Coquí took careful steps, making countless stops for his growing fandom. He even made it on-stage, dancing alongside the live band! While the wind scrambled our initial strategy—making it tough to hand out flyers and shifting our B2B networking focus—the team rallied. Staff captured critical sign-ups for the parade, vendors were invited to collaborate digitally via our website, and fans walked away with endearing pictures and a truly memorable experience.

Windy Lessons

Every event is a masterclass. While the day was a massive success for fan engagement, our post-event audit highlighted exactly how we can level up for the next activation:

  • Heavy winds require a lower tent profile right from the start. Moving forward, the Coquí will live outside the tent in front of our SALUS banner for photo-ops, leaving the canopy strictly as a hub for sign-ups, flyers, and business inquiries.

  • In the excitement of a pivoting event, clear roles are everything. Next time, we will ensure dedicated handlers stay glued to the mascot at all times to maximize sign-ups while the performer commands the crowd.

  • High-energy festivals move fast. We are refining our admin strategy to ensure we secure direct, face-to-face contact with key vendors and event organizers to lock in future gig-work before the day wraps.

Thank you, 40-mph winds, for forcing our Coqui out of his comfort zone and straight into the hearts of the festival-goers.

The ultimate marketing takeaway? When the wind blows your tent down, keep moving!
