Experiential Gold at a Senior Pageantry. ¡WEPA!

A Senior Pageantry extravaganza in celebration of Puerto Rican culture.

The live DJ dropped the beat, and the entire room erupted. It’s not just a song, t’s practically Puerto Rico’s second national anthem. It’s what's played at every parade, festival, and backyard barbecue that celebrates this beautiful Caribbean island.

Nestled in the Southeast Bronx, the Melchor Senior Center (operated by Regional Aid for Interim Need, or R.A.I.N.) was absolutely lit with excitement.  The center director and coordinator planned a magnificent Puerto Rican Heritage Day event, drawing in local and state officials, family, friends, and eager senior attendees for a "Senior Pageantry" extravaganza.

Contestants proudly represented their home municipalities, parading in vibrant traditional dress, dancing to classic rhythms, and reciting heartfelt poetry. Contestants even took a turn down the runway in elegant evening wear while the crowd enjoyed traditional Puerto Rican dishes.

But the real show was just getting started...

Enter a SALUS Giant

After a tough decision by a distinguished panel of local and state officials (with plenty of vocal help from the audience!), two esteemed seniors were crowned Mr. and Mrs. Coquí. With the crowns secured, the atmosphere suddenly shifted from great to legendary.

The crowd roared as our beloved Giant stepped out from behind the curtains! The second Mr. and Mrs. Coquí were crowned; our SALUS Giant began to dance, stomp, and clap right along to the DJ's beat.

Suddenly, age was just a number. Seniors in their 70s, 80s, and 90s didn't wait for an invitation, they rushed to the stage! They sang, they stomped, they clapped in authentic Puerto Rican fashion, dancing alongside the Giant Coquí in pure, carefree joy.

What a vibe. Total WEPA energy!
